EXPOSITIONS PRÉCÉDENTES / PREVIOUS EXHIBITIONS

The 22nd France-Japan Multinational Contemporary Art Exhibition 2021
The exhibition organized by JIAS (Japan International Artists Society) which celebrated its 22nd anniversary, was held like last year at the National Art Center in Roppongi, Tokyo. The 500 works created by 347 Japanese and foreign artists thoroughly fascinated visitors. The exhibition which lasted from Thursday the 5th to Sunday the 15th in August of 2021 was a giant success.

When first stepping into the entrance of the gallery, one was able get a pretty clear idea of what this exhibition aimed to represents, which for this year was not to be constrained by any type of genre or any particular theme. Various artistic styles with international touches, oil paintings, watercolors, Japanese-style paintings, black-and-white works, three-dimensional and handcrafted works all welcomed those when entering. At the back of the hall, a clear light submerges the observer and pieces wrapped in copper wire float in front of a large folding screen, forming a poetic sculpture.

Exhibition details
Along the exhibition route, 100 works created by 94 foreign artists in a wide variety of patterns, techniques, colors, in two or three dimensions were exhibited. Once again this year, renowned artists from the world of French salons, artists from the Salon d'Automne and many others from the Netherlands, the United States and China took part. Further down, we could see a variety of pieces from the rich and vibrant scene of contemporary Japanese art: oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, Japanese-style paintings, abstract and concrete works landscapes, digital works, all this awaited those in attendance.

In the panoramic space at the back of the room, 11 monumental works were exhibited on a long 5 m high wall, not failing to impress and inspire the public.

The universe of each artist took over the spaces of the walls and the "Espace privé" section, which maintained its reputation from last year as being worth the view. In addition, the project initiated last year by the president of JIAS Bumpei MAGORI, which aimed to highlight works of architecture and spacial designs were also presented.

This collection of 500 works, including 400 works by 253 Japanese artists, had once again given life to this unique exhibition that fascinated everyone who participated this year.
On behalf of foreign artists who had to give up traveling to Japan, Mr. Jean-Marie ZACCHI, Honorary President and advisor to the exhibition of contemporary art France-Japan, and Mr. Denis LEGRAND, President of the Salon D’Automne gave a congratulatory speeches during the opening day, transcribed live on site and on social media. In addition, Mr. Hervé LOILIER, a member of the jury of the exhibition, the president of the Société des Artistes Français, Mr. Bruno MADELAINE, the honorary president of the Société des Artistes Français, and president of the section Architecture, Mrs. Martine DELALEUF, as well as some of the exhibited artists sent their congratulations by video that were posted on site and on social media. As of today, we continue to receive a lot of positive feedback regarding the event.

In addition, the exhibition hosted a contemporary dance performance during the opening ceremony, as it did the previous year. In conjunction with local health measures, a limit of 50 people had been set, however this dance echoed the exhibited works in a majestic way and delighted the guests. The dancers transmitted their “joy of living” and their passion of dancing, expressing the “present”.  The cheerful, at times dramatic, choreography was a demonstration of the spiritual beauty of Japan, enhanced by Beethoven's "Ode to Joy "

As was the case last year, it was once heartbreaking to organize this exhibition in the midst of a public health emergency.  Nevertheless, mandatory health precautions were taken and more than 300 to 400 people were able to attend the exhibition every day to admire the works on display, while being able to take the time to browse at their own pace.

While some exhibiting artists had to give up on traveling to Japan, and despite our regret, they were able to console themselves thanks to the messages received from people from Japan and elsewhere. Indeed, the public filled  the internet with many positive comments regarding this event.

Some of the attendees who had always been so delighted to come every year gave us the following messages:
"Each year, the exhibition seems to be adorned, thank you for this magnificent moment", "In addition to the usual artists, it seems that there are a lot of newcomers, doesn't it? While many exhibitions have had to be canceled, I am really excited to witness this new artistic breath and can't wait to see what happens next! ".
Other visitors also commented, addressing the team in attendance:
“Not only are there a lot of works, but there is such a wide variety of genres ingeniously put forward. I was constantly amazed. ",
“This is my first time coming, and I will be coming back next year, no doubt ! ".
In addition, many people said: "I watched the works on the internet, but I had to see the works for real."
This kind of message tells us how social media can contribute to art exhibitions in the future.

Finally, this year we once again supported a charity organization that helps the areas affected by the great earthquake in eastern Japan "The Project to buy art supplies for children who love painting in the city of Rikuzentakata" placed a donation box at the entrance of the exhibition hall. A total of 52,662 yen was collected which helped buy 603 sketchbooks for day cares in the town of Rikuzentakata.
